There is a certain beauty in Sandra Cisneros''s writing that helps her to stand out from the crowd. It is beautiful and absolutely heart wrenching all at the same time. She paints pictures of an emotional range rarely found in modern literature. Focusing in on Latina women, this collection of short stories ranges in plot from a witch woman in her home country to a desperately in love young woman who can''t seem to find her way out of a relationship that is obviously not good for her to a collection of prayers from a community of people.

This reads quickly, but is definitely one of those books that needs time to digest after you get through a story. Surface meanings do not come easily here, let alone those buried deep in the typeface. The writing is a tad depressing, but that fits with the overarching theme of women in poverty, struggling to get by, and yet seeing a sad beauty surrounding their worlds that nobody else seems to notice. Thankfully, there are a few sections where Cisneros drives the fits of triumphant womanhood home to save us from being swallowed whole by misery.

All in all a great read and very accessible to all genders and races.

A Compelling Collection of Short Stories That Is Both Enthralling and Challenging to Read

This collection of 22 literary short stories is both compelling and challenging to read. And the most interesting thing happened: I felt that I was living and breathing in a world unfamiliar to me. I was an honored guest in Mexican life and families. I wasn''t an unwanted stranger left peering through the windows. I belonged there. (Wow!)

Written by Sandra Cisneros, the disparate stories are arranged to take the reader through a woman''s life—from childhood to adulthood. Almost all are written in the first person, and none is connected to any other in terms of characters or plot. But all of them are a little piece of genius, a little slice of brilliance.

Here is a sampling:
• "My Friend Lucy Who Smells Like Corn" is a magical romp through a child''s day with her best friend.

• "Eleven" is a heartbreaking account of what it feels like to be an 11-year-old girl.

• "One Holy Night" tells the oh-so-sad story of a 14-year-old girl who falls for a much-older man and finds herself pregnant.

• "My Tocaya" is a tale about a teenager rising from the dead. (Well, sort of.)

• "Woman Hollering Creek" is about feminist empowerment—even for those women who need it most as they watch incredulously from the sidelines.

• "Eyes of Zapata" is a poignant reimagining of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata Salazar from the eyes of one of his many mistresses, one who just happens to have witch-like qualities.

• "Bien Pretty," which is my favorite, is a story of love and heartbreak and resilience.

This is an enthralling, sophisticated, and complex collection of short stories that joyfully transported me to another culture. And THAT is the power of reading!

I had such a wonderful time reading this collection of stories by Sandra Cisneros! The stories are so thoughtful and well-written. I am in amazement! I liked that I felt the stories were very relatable to me and really touched my heart and soul. I felt inspired while reading. I feel close to her since she is Mexican American also. I read the stories at night before bedtime. I went ahead and bought her book Caramelo next which I am currently reading. It will be my second time reading it, as I read it once over a decade ago in my twenties.

I bought the book for one story, "Eleven," which I think is outstanding. The other stories'' content surprised me; some of them made me uncomfortable. All of them were paintings in words. Some I loved and some I hated, but all of them made me think. This would be a great read for a book club, so that women [okay, maybe men, too] could discuss these stories.

As usual, great, great work from Sandra Cisneros. She has such a unique voice and style and through her myriad narrators, this short story collection lays bare the realities of those who are oppressed and victimized. Many of the narrators are double minorities and the issues span from identity crises and gender bias, to patriarchal violence and class stratification. Cisneros has a way of using a conversational and seemingly simplistic (and often times childlike) voice to expose the very troubling and complex issues that occur to those who are caught between a rock and a hard place.

Cisneros is among the very best in Chicana/o literature. She is brutally honest and not afraid to deal with the ugly side of stark reality. Often times funny, and always moving, this collection is highly recommended to all.
